Week 15-18: (19/5/14 - 13/6/14)

Submission FYP Report & Logbook

Finally, I just need to finish up my final and my log book. The final report need to be in hardcover. I also have updated all the software needed by the FYP committee via, FYP page http://fyp.bmi.unikl.edu.my/
I submitted my final report on Friday 6 June 2014; one copy for library an another for my supervisor Assoc. Prof. Dr Mohd Izhar bin Abu Bakar.

Week 14: (12/5/14 - 16/5/14)

FYP2 Presentation Day

This week is a presentation week for FYP2 also know as Industrial Day. It was held on Friday 16 May 2014, from 9.00 AM until 12.00 AM at Gemilang Hall of  UniKL-BMI. On last Monday I already print out the poster for my presentation. The presentation required the student to present about the project. My presentation has been assess by two assessors, representatives from TNB.

Week 13: (5/5/14 - 9/5/14)

Poster Design

A poster has been design in Power Point on A1 size which is 59.4 x 84.1 cm. Since next week is the Industrial Day, I have to finish the poster by this week. The poster consist of abstract, objective, methodology, results and conclusion. For the results part, I only show one example due to limited space.

Week 12: (28/4/14 - 2/5/14)

Troubleshooting and Testing

For this week, I have done some troubleshooting for my project. However the output still didn't show any value like I expected. I have to get ready for my presentation day. Here is a video I made for my project.

A Development of A Simple Buck Boost Converter Using Pulse Width Modulation

Week 11: (21/4/14 - 25/4/14)

Hardware Design

The hardware design can be separated into two section which are, circuit construction and casing development. For circuit construction I have designed the PCB layout using DipTrace for both circuit. For casing development, I made a box that can be fix for both circuit including the volt and amp meter display.

Week 10: (14/4/14 - 18/4/14)

Simulation Results

For this week, I have done several simulation on my circuit. The idea is make some further comparison with the calculation. For PWM circuit, I put it the output into oscilloscope to see the Ton and Toff by setting Rv ratio for 10% to 90%.

For buck boost circuit, the same range of Rv ratio was applied to see the output voltage for both buck and boost operation mode.

Week 9: (7/4/14 - 12/4/14)

Simulation on The Whole Circuit

The circuit that I designed consist of MOSFET, diode, DPDT switch, 555 Timer, transistor, LED, variable resistor, resistor, capacitor, and inductor. After several simulation, this circuit is working fine.

Week 8: (31/3/14 - 4/4/14)

Redesign The Whole Circuit

For last week problem, I have come out with a better solution. Based from my research it is better to design a combination of buck and boost circuit rather than a buck boost circuit. The combination of the circuit still can perform buck and boost in one circuit and it give a positive output value. The concepts are, during buck operation, Q1 will receive signal from PWM while Q2 is left as open circuit. And during boost operation, Q2 will receive signal from PWM while Q1 is left as closed circuit. This can be achieve by putting another switch for example double pole double throw DPDT to perform the task.

Week 7: (17/3/14 - 21/3/14)

Simulation Problem

This week I started to construct the buck boost circuit in Proteus. I decided to use MOSFET instead of transistor for switching purpose. I also put volt and amp meter for input and output display. However, the circuit only manage to buck from 0.5V to 11.25V as I increase the Rv; the duty cycle D also increase. It cannot boost the output at all. Supposedly, when the duty cycle is more than 0.5, it should boost the output more than the input. Maybe the value for inductor need to be changed. Furthermore, the output is in negative value.

Week 6: (10/3/14 - 14/3/14)

PWM Simulation

The PWM need to be fix to a constant frequency. I am using IC 555 timer to produce the PWM.  So I try to put a parallel diode at end of each variable resistor leg, and it proved it can be control. From my research, an astable circuit produces a 'square wave', this is a digital waveform with sharp transitions between low (0V) and high (+Vs). I noticed that the duration's of the low and high states may be different. The value for R1, Rv and C1 can be calculated later on.

Week 5: (3/3/14 - 7/3/14)

Problem with The Main Component

I found that it is very hard for to find the LTC 3115-1. The price show in the online market is too expensive and it come with the the whole test board. I have search all the online company, no one want to take for small amount of order.  So, I decided to redesign my buck boost circuit but still using PWM. This time around, I want to go to the basic of buck boost converter. The basic circuit are easy to find those components such as inductor, capacitor and diode. For switch, I can use transistor or MOSFET.

Week 4: (24/2/14 - 28/4/14)

Component Searching

After coming back from Mecca & Medina, I started to find the main component for my project which is IC LTC 3115-1. From my observation, Malaysia's market doesn't have this kind of IC. I have been searching all electronic shop around Jalan Pasar, and no one can offer me the component. So, I decided to buy it online from http://my.element14.com/ .

Week 2-3: (10/2/14 - 21/2/14)

Umrah

For Week 2&3, I have to postpone my project progress due to my trip to perform Umrah with my family. I hope that I can make up for the lost time when I come back. I already asked permission from my supervisor, Dr. Izhar and all my other subjects lecturer.

Week 1: (3/2/14 - 7/2/14)

Registration Week

On the first week of January 2014 semester, as usual, senior students returned on the following week after the MSR, and everybody were busy with registration subjects. For me, I have to register the WPB49906 FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2 subject so that I can be able to continue my Final Year Project from the previous semester. I also have registered three others subjects to complete my study. For the project I haven't start anything yet, but I will start with checking the components availability.
